“We were basically homeless and looking for a place to stay. [Food] was something that my mom couldn't really provide. So the school would at least provide me with lunch to eat, so I wouldn't go hungry.” – Mario, age 13
Without healthy food to eat, children can't grow up strong, do well in school or live their best lives. But even though we have plenty of food in America, children still go hungry.
But there's hope. This is a problem we know how to solve.
How? Through existing programs at schools and community centers that feed kids, and by strengthening programs that kids rely on for meals at home.
Here’s how we’re making sure every kid gets the food they need:
-- Making breakfast part of the school day, just like lunch
-- Free, healthy school lunches for every student
-- A healthy snack after school, before kids go home
-- Protecting programs that help families feed their children
“We feed our children here,” said Pam Davis, an elementary school principal from Virginia whose school provides three meals a day to students, with help from No Kid Hungry. “And we've taken this mission on because it's the right thing to do for our children and our families. Our families are working hard. Our families need our support. It is our responsibility to help one another.”
