NEW ORLEANS -- The State Legislature voted over the weekend to extend an expiring revenue provision, narrowly avoiding deep cuts to the state’s budget that would have eliminated Louisiana’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
The following is a statement from No Kid Hungry Louisiana Director Rhonda Jackson:
“On behalf of hungry kids in Louisiana, I’m pleased the State Legislature stood up for Louisiana families by protecting the state’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). This budget compromise ensures that more than 870,000 Louisianans – nearly half of them kids – won’t lose access to a critical lifeline, and that the state can continue to provide food aid in the event of a storm or natural disaster.
This close call underscores the importance of federal programs that ensure kids don’t go to school hungry and working families don’t have to decide whether to pay rent or put food on the table. To that end, No Kid Hungry Louisiana continues to work with partners across the state to make sure kids get breakfast at school every morning and have access to healthy meals afterschool and in the summer time.”
