“Diluting benefits for all families in future years is not an acceptable compromise,” said Gromley.

5/17/24, WASHINGTON, DC — Today, House Agriculture Committee Chairman G.T. Thompson introduced the majority’s proposed Farm Bill. This legislation, which is reauthorized approximately once every 5 years, includes authorization for SNAP, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The committee plans to consider amendments and hold a vote for this bill on Thursday, May 23. The following is a statement from Jason Gromley, Senior Director for Share Our Strength and its No Kid Hungry campaign:
“We're disappointed the Farm Bill introduced by Republicans on the House Agriculture Committee fails to meet the needs of more than 40 million Americans who use SNAP by including shortsighted changes to the Thrifty Food Plan that will cut up to $30 billion in SNAP benefits over the next decade. We urge committee members to vote against this bill as written.
“While this bill contains some improvements, diluting benefits for all families in future years is not an acceptable compromise. Families across the country are struggling to keep up with the rising cost of food, and the vast majority of people who receive SNAP benefits are children, seniors, veterans and people with disabilities. They deserve a Farm Bill that invests in their future through a strong SNAP program.
“During next week's markup, House Agriculture Committee members have the opportunity to do the right thing for kids and families by removing these harmful cuts from the bill. A failure to do so should be met with resounding opposition to this proposal."
