WASHINGTON, DC — Today, the House of Representatives returned from its recess ahead of a planned vote this week to pass its budget reconciliation resolution. This resolution calls for $2 trillion in spending cuts, including at least $230 billion for programs administered by USDA, like SNAP. The following is a statement from Meredith Jorss, Associate Director for Share Our Strength and its No Kid Hungry campaign:
“Cutting grocery benefits won’t reduce hunger, but will mean more families will struggle to afford food. As the House of Representatives returns to Washington this week, we urge them to consider how these cuts will affect the 40 million Americans, including 1 in 5 kids, who use SNAP and vote against this resolution that promises to increase hunger and hardship.
“These cuts could prevent SNAP benefits from keeping up with the cost of food or from reaching all the families that need them. These cuts could take many forms, but the end result would be the same: families will struggle to feed their children. Instead of trying to force these changes through the budget process, Congress should support kids and families by passing a bipartisan Farm Bill that protects and strengthens SNAP.”
