VA school district introduces new way to feed kids in summer

This summer, the Fairfax County School System in Virginia introduced a new way to feed kids in the summer – community barbecues. Through support from No Kid Hungry, the school district’s director of food and nutrition services moved the summer feeding program out of cafeterias and onto font lawns, hosting outdoor barbecues at 11 schools, four apartment complexes, and a community center. The goal is to reach a broader population in a state where 5 in 6 kids eligible for free or reduced-price school lunches do not get free summer meals.
