11/18/24, WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Senate Agriculture Chair Debbie Stabenow introduced the majority’s proposed Farm Bill. This legislation, which is reauthorized approximately once every five years, includes authorization for SNAP, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The following is a statement from Jason Gromley, Senior Director for Share Our Strength and its No Kid Hungry campaign:
“The proposed Farm Bill introduced by Sen. Stabenow serves as a model for how to protect the value of SNAP benefits and further strengthen the program. SNAP is one of our most powerful tools to fight hunger, and it's used by over 40 million Americans to buy groceries. Congress has already delayed passing this Farm Bill for over a year, and now is the time for lawmakers to quickly find a path forward and provide certainty and security for kids, families and farmers.
“This bill reflects the priorities of lawmakers in both chambers who have emphasized further investments in SNAP that would remove red tape for eligible families, support education and nutrition incentive programs and protect participants from benefit theft and fraud. The vast majority of these grocery benefits go to children, seniors, veterans and people with disabilities, and it's vital that they continue to have reliable access to this important anti-hunger program.
“We are grateful for Sen. Stabenow's years of service dedicated to ending child hunger. From investing in programs like SNAP to advocating for new possibilities like Summer EBT and rural non-congregate meals, she's been a fierce champion of ensuring all kids can access the food they need to grow and thrive.
“Families deserve a Farm bill that invests in their future, and our communities grow stronger from its vital investments in nutrition, agriculture, and local economies where those dollars are spent. Now is the time for Congress to deliver a bipartisan bill that protects and strengthens SNAP."
